As part of its first visit to Greece, the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir honors this invitation by presenting the work Kanonen Pokajanen, of the emblematic Estonian composer Arvo Pärt, under the direction of Tõnu Kaljuste.
The Festival European Polyphony is a Greek-French collaboration taking place in the island of Rhodes. The festival celebrates its 4th edition from the 10th to the 24th of October 2022 and for 14 days, transfigures the Medieval City of Rhodes into an active music workshop. The public can participate in numerous interactive music workshops and concerts with internationally renowned artists and musical ensembles.
Created in March 1998, the Kanon Pokajanen (Canon of Repentance) is Arvo Pärt’s most monumental work. Its long genesis, a meticulous work of assimilation of the text in Slavonic, the stripping and the subtlety of his writing covers the same sincerity, the same spiritual and contemplative radiance as that of icon painting. A dialogue with the Sacred, where time stands still, held in the picturesque Greek orthodox Church of the Evangelismos of Rhodes, by a Choir considered as one of the best Choir in the World.
Founded in 1981, the Estonian Chamber Philharmonic Choir is an internationally acclaimed vocal ensemble with a total of 15 Grammy nominations, including two awards. The Choir performs a vast repertoire ranging from Gregorian chant to 20th century music, with a prominent place for Estonian composers.
Since August 2021 the artistic director and chief conductor is the founder of the Choir, Tõnu Kaljuste. He will lead the Choir into the Kanon Pokajanen, giving to the public the strength and deepness of the Estonian composer, Avro Pärt.
This first collaboration between the Festival European Polyphony and the EPCC, is a stepping stone in consolidating the mission of the festival : create an international institution, a meeting point for the arts, culture, creativity, and dialogue. Making classical music accessible to all by proposing an innovative way to experience art and music.
The Festival European Polyphony is delighted and honored to welcome the EPCC in Rhodes. The two concerts will take place on Saturday 22 and Sunday 23 October at 21.00 in the church of Evangelismos.
