Paul Hillier is Director of the Early Music Institute at the Indiana University School of Music in Bloomington. A Grammy nominee and the recipient of two Edison Prizes, Hillier enjoys a busy career as a solo singer specializing in medieval lyrics and as a conductor, directing orchestras and choirs around the world
For many years Paul Hillier's name was synonymous with the Hilliard Ensemble
of which he was co-founder and musical director, and with whom he
toured widely and made over thirty records.
From 1990 - 1996 he was Professor of Music at the University of
California, Davis where he formed Theatre of Voices, of which he
is artistic director. The ensemble now tours regularly throughout
North America and Europe and has an exclusive recording contract
with Harmonia
Mundi USA.
Paul Hillier has published several anthologies of vocal music and
recently completed a book
on the music of Arvo Pärt, Published by Oxford University
Press.
In recent years he has collaborated with a rich diversity of
musicians, including the Kronos
Quartet, Bobby
McFerrin, Steve Reich, Terry
Riley, Andrew Lawrence-King and Nigel North.
Paul Hillier's publications have come out under Oxford University Press, Faber & Faber and Fazer Editions; he has recorded under many different labels, like ECM, EMI, Finlandia, Florilegium, Harmonia Mundi, Hat-Art, Hyperion, Meridian, Plant Life, Reflexe, Saga and UEA.
In spring 2001 Paul Hillier accepted the offer made by Tõnu Kaljuste and Estonian Ministery of Culture to take over the post of the artistic director and principal conductor of EPCC starting from the 2001/02 concert season. In his statement he writes:
... It is not just that a relatively small country has produced some of the finest musicians and composers of our time, but that Estonia is an example to other countries of what the proper function of art in society can be: not as a mere ornament, or badge of honour, but as something which emerges organically from the history and traditions of the country itself. Above all, the essence of Estonian music rests in its powerful choral tradition, of which the EPCC are the recognised ambassadors. ... |
