Christmas time breaks the common understanding as if the main goal of the arts was progress and the breaking of boundaries. Ritual suddenly rules – pieces and sounds are being repeated in similar situations. Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir performed the birth story of Jesus Christ even two times this December: a motet by Marc-Antoine Charpentier and an oratorio by Heinrich Schütz.
One of the tendencies of the choir’s “time with Hillier” has been the finding and carrying out of interesting timbres, which brings about captivating sound effects but sometimes also causes a loss of tension.
