The Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir has released a CD „PSALMS. Mendelssohn, Kreek“, which contains a sacred a cappella choral music by these two composers.
The conductor Daniel Reuss has chosen to record “Three Psalms” op 78, „Jauchzet dem Herrn, alle Welt“, „Hebe deine Augen auf“ (from the oratorio „Eliah“), „Denn er hat seinen Engeln befohlen“ etc from the output of the famous Geraman romantic composer Felix Mendelssohn (1809–1847) and popular Estonian choir productions The Psalms of David and several religious folk songs by the popular Estonian composer Cyrillus Kreek (1889–1962).
Reuss has decided to combine the productions by Mendelssohn and Kreek because he finds a familiarity between these two composers. They both write very vocally but at the same time have a great sense of almost instrumental colour to the choir sound. Besides their music has subtle harmonies in regard to the text.
The recording is made on Septembril 14-17, 2009 at the Haapsalu Dome Church, the producer is Florian B. Schmidt (Germany).
