The Tallinn Chamber Orchestra was founded in 1993 by Tõnu Kaljuste, who had already collaborated successfully with the mayor group of players. Therefore the first appearance of the orchestra in May 1993 presented the listener with evidence of a well-established and homogenous ensemble.
The TCO has performed programs of instrumental music with such guest conductors as Richard Tognetti, Terje Tonnesen, Paul Mägi and Juha Kangas. The latter was the principal conductor of the orchestra in 1995/96. Next four concert seasons that post has been hold by Tõnu Kaljuste. Starting from September 2001 the post of Artistic Advisor and First Guest Conductor of TCO is held by Juha Kangas, who simultaneously continues as the principal conductor of Ostrobothnian Chamber Orchestra. An all-round overview of Juha Kangas' cooperation with OCO can be found from the article by Anu Karlson (Finnish Music Qartely Magazine 2/96).
EPCC and TCO have worked together with remarkable results, performing works by J. S. Bach and A. Pärt. In 1992 they gave a Berlin-premier of Te Deum by Arvo Pärt. In 1993 they recorded Pärt's Te Deum and Tüür's Crystallisatio, in 1996 Pärt's Litany - all on ECM label. In 2001 the latest TCO record by ECM label came out: Heino Eller's (1887 - 1970) Neenia - estonian instrumental chamber music conducted by Tõnu Kaljuste. This time without EPCC's participation.
The joint concert tours have taken the orchestra and the choir to Finland, Germany, France, Italy, U.S.A., Russia, England and Japan.
